I live in Bath with my wife and two dogs, Monty and Josh. I have two children, one in Scotland and one in Holland. I work at the University of Bath where I do research, teach, and run the Bath Science Festival. In my spare time I work with young people. I am involved in running two youth clubs and many other activities for young people aged 8-18. I also love folk dancing, and am a keen fan of Status Quo. I have an un natural interest in the weather. I love nothing better than climbing mountains with my dogs.

How I Use Maths In My Job:
I use maths 100% all the time in my job. My main field of work is applying maths to solve real world problems. This means that I use calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, matrices, statistics, probability all the time. I also work on turning real world problems into maths (using modelling and mechanics) and then solving them on a super computer using numerical methods.

I spend all of my time going to places which need maths to solve real world problems. At the moment this means that most of my time is spent trying to use maths to help understand COVID and to work out the best, and safest way, to come out of lock down. I also work a lot on understanding the weather and climate and using maths to predict what our future climate will be. My maths takes me to many places. For example I work with the food industry, and the power industry and also help to design new WiFi networks.

My Typical Day
I start work at 8am and think about maths all day till 8pm or later. Much of my time is spent working with (PhD) students and helping them woth their projects, which are all about applying maths to solve real world problems
