I am Francesca. I am originally Italian and I currently live in Edinburgh. In 2014 I have spent six months in Tokyo: I found it an amazingly enriching experience. I love travelling, meeting friends, and engage in deep conversations with others.
I also love cooking… and I love good food… As a good Italian, I am an advocate of the theory “No pineapple on Pizza”.

I am the Mathematics Engagement Officer for the University of Edinburgh.
My job consists in showing the fun and creative side of Maths, and showing that Maths is beautiful, and that we meet Maths everywhere. To reach this goal, I run workshops for schools, produce educational resources, take part in exhibits and Science Festivals.
Before starting my current job, I completed a PhD in Maths. My research was in an area called Topology, which studies shapes.

What or who inspired you to follow your career?
One of my secondary school teachers inspired me to study Maths. She was really keen on showing us that there is much more to Maths than numbers. She made me aware of the fun and creative side of Maths.
What's your favourite use for maths in everyday life?
Anything related to Logic and Problem Solving.
What did you think about Maths when you were in school?
I was fascinated by Maths
What did you want to be after you left school?
I was not sure
Were you ever in trouble at school?
I was not really in trouble, I used to enjoy studying and learning. However, I did go through hard times due to health reasons. i have a severe visual impairment, and when I went to school almost everything, especially STEM subject, was explained through chalk and blackboard. I was not able to read the blackboard and that used to cause me a lot of distress, especially at University. A couple of times, during myfisrt year at Uni, I thought University was not for me for this reason. In the end, everything went well, and my results turned out to be much better than I expected.
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
I am not sure...
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Andrea Bocelli
What's your favourite food?
Pizza (Neapolitan style)
