I live in Buckinghamshire with my wife, two boys (9 & 11), two cats (Ricky & Elvis) and a dog (Luna). I work at University College London, organizing the teaching in the Dept of Computer Science, teaching Maths to 2nd year students, and doing research on images, vision and colour. When I’m not working I love to play boardgames (the more complicated the better!) and walking the dog when its not too muddy. I wish I could find more time to make things with my hands which I love.

How I Use Maths In My Job:
Develop computer algorithms to do specific things with images. For example to detect guns or explosives in X-ray images of bags scanned at airports.
Use maths to understand the structure of the visual world. For example what colours tend to occur together in images; or to come up with an ‘alphabet’ of image details such as lines, corners, junctions, dots, …
The areas of maths that I mostly use for this work are: geometry, statistics and probability.
