• Question: have you met any neurologists and are you a doctor of maths

      Hi Hasan,

      I do have a doctorate in maths. (I received my PhD several years ago.)

      I don’t know any neurologists in particular, but I have met some people working in related areas, such as neuroscience (science of the nervous system), neural networks (artificial intelligence and machine learning).

    I meet neurologists a lot because part of my work uses maths to help to understand the brain. The way that this works is that the brain gives off signals which we can record. In order to make sense of these signals you have to use a lot of maths. This then gives you a picture of the brain activity which the neurologists can interpret. As Arick says, mathemeticians also work a lot on studying the nervous system. There is a famous set of mathematical equations called the Hodgkin-Huxley equations which describe how nerves work, and mathematicians study these.

    Yes, I have a Ph.D. in mathematics. For historical reasons, the usual title for a doctorate is “Doctor of Philosophy” whatever subject your research training is in. Just to add to the confusion, my first degree title is “Bachelor of Arts” although that was also in mathematics! But no, I don’t know any neurologists.
