0 Question: Can you find the true length of Britain’s coastline? Keywords: accuracy, coastline, measurement Asked by Sam on 31 Dec 2019.
Diana Kornbrot answered on 31 Dec 2019:
That is a VERY good question. The answer depends on thelenght of ‘ruler’ you are using, because coastlines are fractal. Ify you choose a metre rule you will get ap recise answer, bu twill miss all the kinks smaller than a metre. Good sources on fractals are https://fractalfoundation.org/resources/what-are-fractals/ , https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/roots-of-unity/a-few-of-my-favorite-spaces-the-mandelbrot-set/, and Mandelbrot’s wonderful [but difficult] book The Fractal Geometry of Nature: Updated and Augmented by Benoit B. Mandelbrot.
so basically the answer is NO
