      Depends on the application, but there are some general algorithms that encode rules like ‘always choose the least expensive option’ when you are faced with a situation in which a decision has to be made. Expensive might be in terms of a variety of things: money, distance to travel, computer resources used…

      Another rule, particularly in legal applications, might be ‘aim to reach a decision that is fair to all parties’.
